Man in black suit at Screamfest event.

Johnny Starke is a Los Angeles–based film and television producer whose work spans independent features, boundary-pushing genre films, and character-driven storytelling. He began his career in New York City at the legendary Troma Entertainment, an unconventional training ground that instilled a resourceful, hands-on approach to independent filmmaking. With that foundation, Starke has built a career around filmmakers with distinct voices and projects that demand both creative ambition and practical ingenuity.

In 2019, he produced Morgan Cooper’s original BEL-AIR, the viral short film that reimagined The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as a contemporary drama and became the catalyst for the acclaimed Peacock series executive produced by Will Smith. He remained with BEL-AIR as it made the leap from proof of concept to television. That same passion for bold, filmmaker-driven work extends to his feature credits, including Eddie Alcazar’s DIVINITY, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and was executive produced by Steven Soderbergh. Other recent films include THE CYCLE and THE SWALLOW, with OBSESSION producer James Harris, and two installments of the V/H/S franchise, alongside producer Josh Goldbloom.

A twenty-year veteran of the film industry and a member of the Directors Guild of America, Starke brings a filmmaker-first perspective to producing, combining creative problem solving, physical production experience, and a deep commitment to original storytelling.

A day in the life.

Outside of filmmaking, there is nothing Johnny loves more than old records and cultural archeology. Filmmaker Anthony Ladesich captured his music obsession in this short doc that won first place at Manchester International in 2018.

A peek at the process.
